    Age Spots

Age spots are flat, tan, brown, or black spots that typically appear on areas of the skin exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. Despite their name, age spots are not directly linked to aging but are associated with long sun exposure.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun stimulates the production of melanin, which can lead to uneven distribution and localized darkening of the skin on the face, hands, arms, shoulders, and other sun-exposed areas of the body.

Age spots are more common in older individuals, as they tend to have had more cumulative sun exposure throughout their lives. However, they can also occur in younger people who frequently expose their skin to the sun without adequate sun protection.

Key characteristics of age spots include:

    1. Color: Age spots typically range in color from light tan to dark brown or black.
    2. Size and Shape: Age spots can vary in size, ranging from small specks to larger patches.

Age spots are harmless however, for some, they might pose as a cosmetic, however, protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure can help minimize their formation.

If age spots are a cosmetic concern, various treatment options are available to lighten or remove them. These may include:

    • Over-the-counter topical creams: They are products that often contain active ingredients that target skin aging, boost collagen production, and hydrate the skin.
    • Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing: This solution can help remove the outer layer of damaged skin cells, as it stimulates collagen production and promotes the growth of fresh, healthy skin cells, resulting in a brighter complexion.
    • Chemical peels: A chemical peel involves applying a chemical solution to the skin, which exfoliates the top layers, revealing fresher, brighter skin underneath.
